'Reach Out' Behind The Concept And More With Director Philip Andelman
25 November 2008 || By Krystal
Company X Editor Barney Miller recently teamed up with Partizan Director Philip Andelman on a new music video for Hilary Duff. 'Reach Out' is the first single and one of two brand new tracks from Duff's hot-off-the-press album, 'Best of Hilary Duff,' via Hollywood Records. An exciting mash-up of Depeche Mode's '89 hit, 'Personal Jesus,' the video features guest rapper The Prophet. The decadent video is a career-defining vehicle for the artistic transformation of the former child-star.
'It was great working with Barney because with all the time we've spent together, he totally understands my aesthetic,' remarks Director Philip Andelman. 'Due to a very hectic shooting schedule, I was unable to supervise the cut and I felt really comfortable working with him remotely. Barney's sense of pacing is so shrewd, each cut packing such a tight punch, that the tweaks between edits were really minimal. The only thing I regret about not being there in person was missing out on his witty banter sessions.'
Set around a baroque estate, the sultry 'Reach Out' opens in the chill of night. Ushering in the proverbial 'new era' of Hilary Duff, The Prophet emcees amid statue-adorned gardens, as jump cuts of Hilary intermittently appear, heightening the suspense of her grand introduction. Hilary's face finally enters the frame at her vocal cue. The ensuing portrait highlights the impassioned songstress costumed in exotic attire' from classic to shabby-chic to modern-hip' behind classy and decorative backgrounds including a luscious feasting table, baroque furniture, and garden fountains.
For Barney Miller, the project was an opportunity to join creative forces with Philip Andelman once again. The two had previously collaborated on music videos for 'Lady' by Lenny Kravitz, 'Waiting on the World to Change' by John Mayer, and the 2006 MTV Video Award-winner, 'Where'd You Go' by Fort Minor.
'Working with Philip is a very smooth process,' says Miller. 'We have a very organic relationship. The goal was to really conceptualize a defining transformation in Hilary's career, in a classic party atmosphere. Philip eased Hilary into the shoot and guided her through the visual storytelling process. There was some trepidation from management as to whether the treatments were too risqu', but in the end, I think we realized Phil's vision beautifully.'
Drawing inspiration from fashion photography, Andelman used mostly locked cameras to achieve a photographic aesthetic in his compositions. Heightening the video's sense of motion during the edits was critical in realizing Andelman's directorial vision, especially since the treatments were so immersed in the set pieces.
'We utilized a lot of jump cuts and fade-to-black to give the video more sense of movement,' concludes Miller. 'The video is energetic without being frenetic. It was also a matter of how the shots work with the song, and Phil captured most of the elements in-camera. The edits are also very rhythmical, especially from a performance standpoint: it's not just about cutting to the beat of the song. Hilary delivered some great nuance for us to work with.'

Hilary wieghts her acting options with NBC
18 November 2008 || By Krystal
Hilary Duff is no stranger to working on sitcoms, having started on Disney's "Lizzie McGuire." Now, after launching a successful career in movies and music, she's ready to head back to the small screen, this time for NBC.
"Well, right now it's a development deal," she told Tim Kash backstage at "Total Finale Live" Sunday night. "We're going to be working together to try to put a great show together. It's not like I know what the material is going to be yet.
"I get to call all the shots!" the 21-year-old joked. But though she's in control, she doesn't seem to have pinned down any specifics about what she wants to do. "I think I would like to do something funny, so probably a comedy. It's hard to sit here and say, 'I want to be this character and this character.'
"I would like to do something funny ... or I would like to kick ass or something," continued the star of "A Cinderella Story" and "Cheaper by the Dozen." "[I'd want to] be some kind of — not a superhero, but some young person that's empowering and that does something no one expects from her, like take care of problems."
Through the network deal, Duff will not only work on her own show, but will also get to make cameos and have story lines on already existing shows. And she already has a wish list of guest appearances.
"[NBC has] great shows to have arcs on," Duff said. "I would love to do something on 'The Office.' '30 Rock' is great, very funny. Many people have done lots of guest spots on it this season."
Hilary Duff makes no eye contact with ex Joel Madden
17 November 2008 || By Krystal
Speaking of reunions, there was no love-fest rejoining for exes Hilary Duff and Joel Madden. While Good Charlotte stood at the stage door, Hil walked right by without eye contact or words. Duff did get sentimental while recounting her early days on "TRL," standing at the trademarked glass window, watching the fans outside in Times Square. "I didn't ever want to leave the window!" she said.
Hilary Duff was just 2 years old when Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" was released, but that didn't stop her from building a new song of her own — "Reach Out" — around it. The song is featured on her greatest-hits LP, Best of Hilary Duff, which hit stores last week.
" 'Reach Out' is a sample of a Depeche Mode song, 'Personal Jesus,' " she told MTV News at the "Total Finale Live" on Sunday (November 16). "It's different for me. It's a little dancey, and there's a rapper named Prophet who's on it who's really cool and kinda fresh."
In addition to "Reach Out," Duff has another new song on the album, called "Holiday," which found her working with OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder. She describes the song as "a really personal [one]."
Duff isn't just giving her fans her greatest hits — soon the singer/actress will be back in the studio recording new material. "I'm going to start working on a new album in two weeks," she said.
These days, even with a NBC development deal in the works that will bring the singer back to the small screen, she's spending her days "hard-core writing and figuring out what direction to go in."
And the former Disney star said she's looking to go edgier than the music she's done in the past. But she can't help but embrace her feminine side.
"I like so many different kinds of music," she said. "Something poppy and catchy — I'm girly but I think I'm kind of tough, so maybe a little rock influence."

FASHION RULES GETS HILARY DUFF INTERVIEW
6 November 2008 || By Krystal
Fashion Rules! was lucky enough to meet up with Hilary Duff last week, as she took a tiny break after making three films, “Greta,” “Stay Cool,” and “Safety Glass” – and finished cutting two new singles and videos for a new greatest hits collection that’s coming out this month.
But who cares about that trivia? We wanted to know about FASHION – and PERFUME! Hilary was wearing jeans, a t-shirt, a turquoise boyfriend cardigan, a men’s fedora, and her hair was back to blonde, after she’d gone brunette for a movie, “War Inc.”
So here’s a snippet of our interview with the woman who’s made somewhere around 30 or 40 million dollars just on her tween line, “Stuff by Hilary Duff”.
FASHION RULES!: So, Hilary, what’s the future of “Stuff by Hilary Duff”? HILARY DUFF: Well, I’m going to discontinue the line, actually. I don’t really want to continue to design clothing for girls who aren’t my age – I just turned 21, and I tend to shop at Barneys and Satine and Curve, and mix up designer pieces with less expensive pieces – it’s a very Los Angeles and New York way of dressing. And I didn’t have full control of that line anymore. We had some very good years in terms of money, but I can hardly take credit for all of that – I didn’t do it on my own. And anyway, I’m too young to be thinking about only money all the time.
FASHION RULES: But you still love clothes, we can assume? HILARY DUFF: More than ever. That will never go away. But I want to design clothes for women my own age, that’s what excites me now. That’s a challenge to me. In about two weeks, I’m going to announce that I’ve signed a deal with a big clothing company – a fairly mainstream one – and I’m going to design a line for them for the next few years. I already like what they do, so I’m very excited by the opportunity. I can’t wait to get started.
FASHION RULES: Do you feel like this is something you HAVE to do, just because the Olsen Twins, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, and all those celeb girls are doing clothing lines? HILARY DUFF: Hardly. I’ve never done things before they were expected of me. In my new video for “Reach Out,” I wear little shorts – but then I wear a tulle gown. I’ve worn short wigs in videos, long hair, I change my hair color all the time – in fact, I’m feeling the mood to change it now! I really go with my mood and what inspires me. And I don’t think I dress like anyone else.
FASHION RULES: And you are doing a third perfume with Elizabeth Arden? HILARY DUFF: Yes, we’re in the midst of that now – deep into it. You have to have the name approved in every country before you can move forward – if one country’s language interprets it in some kind of negative way, we can’t use that name and have to start over – so it’s a long process. But I’ve learned so much about the process from the people at Arden – I have approvable of everything, and I chose the flowers and scents and notes by their smells but also by their symbols. It’s really really creative.
FASHION RULES: And you are leaving your record company, Hollywood Records, owned by Disney? HILARY DUFF: Yes. I want to make my next record on my own and release it myself – it’s the new way of doing music. I want to do it in my own time and go with my own direction – same as with the clothes. I want to see where it all takes me. I’ve been working so hard for a long time – and I just turned 21 – so it’s time to do it my way!!!

Hilary about her boyfriend Mike Comrie
2 November 2008 || By Krystal
OK Magazine is reporting that Hilary Duff has some wonderful things to say about her NHL boyfriend of more than a year, Mike Comrie.
According to OK, in Hilary's speech at Roberto Clemente Elementary on October 24, she spoke openly about how great it was to be with someone like Mike, who is also passionate about charity work.
"I am so thankful for that day that I met him and all the people we've gotten to feed together."
We also got a juicy bit of news about how Mike is as a boyfriend, when Hilary tells OK! about what Mike did for Hilary on her birthday:
"He does special things all the time and surprises me. On my birthday, there was a very small group of us, and he got up and read a poem. It was like a funny poem, it wasn't like super serious. It was so cute!"
