September 28 - Star is born
Bob and Susan Duff welcome Hilary to the family. Sister Haylie, who is two years older, inspires her sibling throughout childhood: "I always wanted to be like my older sister Haylie. When she learned to ride a bike, I had to as well. If she took ballet lessons, I did too. I took singing lessons because she did. It all just got more intense until it turned into careers for both of us,"

1993 December - California or Bust
Hilary, 6, and Haylie, 8, land parts in the ballet The Nutcracker Suite in San Antonio. The sisters relocate to California from Houston with their mother to break into acting. Dad stays at home to maintain a chain of convenience stores in the Houston area.

1998 September 22 - Ghost of a Chance
After a few television commercials and landing a minor appearance in Hallmark's miniseries True Women, Duff beats out hundreds of other actresses for the lead role of Wendy in the feature-film comedy Casper Meets Wendy. The part marks Duff's first major role in a motion picture.

1999 October 24 - And The Award Goes To...
Duff stars alongside Melissa Gilbert in the TV drama The Soul Collector. Her performance earns her a 2000 Young Artist Award for Best Supporting Actress in a TV Movie or Pilot from the Young Artist Foundation.

2000 March - Down But Not Out
Hilary lands a part in the pilot episode of the NBC sitcom Daddio, starring Michael Chiklis. But the actress nearly gives up on showbiz after being dropped from the cast before the show airs. Despite the disappointment, Duff made an impression. "After working with her the first day," Chiklis later tells the New York Daily News, "I remember saying to my wife, 'This young girl is going to be a movie star. She was completely at ease with herself."

March - Along Comes Lizzie
A week after being let go from Daddio, Duff auditions for Disney's comedy show Lizzie McGuire and is cast as the title character. The show eventually draws 2.3 million viewers per episode, becoming the network's highest-rated offering, making Duff a household name with the tween set.

2001 March 23 - Get Carter
Soon after singer Aaron Carter, 13, guest-stars on Lizzie McGuire, he and Duff, also 13, begin dating. The on-and off-again relationship lasts nearly two years, even when Carter reportedly cheats on Duff with fellow teen actress Lindsay Lohan, 14. This love triangle prompts a feud between the actresses. "Sometimes I feel like I really hate her, which is pretty extreme for me because I don't hate anybody," Duff tells World Entertainment News Network.

2002 March 8 - Military Victory
Duff gets a shot on a major motion picture, playing the younger version of Patricia Arquette's character in Human Nature. Two months later, she stars in the Disney Channel television film Cadet Kelly, which becomes the network's most-watched program in its 19-year history.

2003 March 14 - Lights, Action, Big-Time
Duff plays a damsel in distress opposite Frankie Muniz in Agent Cody Banks, a younger version of the James Bond-type action-adventure films. Worldwide receipts for the film total nearly $60 million. She hits the big-screen again with The Lizzie McGuire Movie. That film grosses more than $55 million worldwide.

May 27 - Divorcing Disney
After talks of renewing Duff's contract, Disney announces that it has split with the rising star due to differences over the direction of her career. "We gave them a very generous offer and unfortunately they passed," a Disney spokeswoman said. "Hilary is a great girl and we truly wish her the best of luck."

August 26 - Topping the Charts
Duff releases her second album, Metamorphosis, which reaches No. 1 on the U.S. charts and sells more than 3.7 million copies. She wins Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Female Singer as well as Best New Female Artist at the World Music Awards.

July - Good Girl likes Bad Boy
After being introduced by a mutual friend, Duff, 16, begins dating Joel Madden, 25, lead singer of the band Good Charlotte. "We were on the same level, even though he was so much older," Duff tells Teen People. The couple denies their relationship until three months before Duff turns 18.

Duff travels to Ontario to perform in a fund-raiser for victims of the December 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia. According to her Web site, the singer donates a portion of sales from her Most Wanted tour to tsunami relief and is also a spokeswoman for Kids with a Cause, a charity organization that teaches children how to get involved with philanthropy.

August - Through the Storm
Duff donates $200,000 to the American Red Cross and $50,000 to USA Harvest for victims of Hurricane Katrina. She also travels to New Orleans to distribute meals. "It's heartbreaking to see the devastation. People are missing family members and have absolutely nothing left, not even food or water. I want to do everything I can to help those who have survived rebuild their lives."
